Rhythm

A few weeks ago, we celebrated our anniversary with a camping trip to Huntington Island State Park. With just a quick walk from our campsite, we could enjoy the beach.

I love the beach in late winter. It’s not too crowded or too noisy or too hot.

One afternoon, we rode our bikes down the beach boardwalk. The tide was high, so the sand was too soft for the bicycles. I asked Steven if we could just sit awhile on the mounds of fine sand.

I breathed in that particular sea-scented air of the ocean’s shore.

I felt the fine crystals of sand filtering through my fingers.

I watched the waves breaking and the seagulls flying overhead.

No talking was necessary. Just listening.

The waves in their constant ebbing - in and out, in and out

The salty ocean air filling my lungs – in and out, in and out

This rhythm of in and out is elemental in all of us, from the breath of God Himself. It is measured by a natural cadence that does not rush ahead and cannot be held back - in perfect balance. It rises and falls beyond my control. Like the tide, time is a perpetual force.

But here is the miracle: God knows every intricacy of time and space. He has already seen the exact path of our every day from birth to death. He knows all that will happen to us along the journey. And He has promised to be with us as our constant companion in the faithful walk forward.

So rest in the quiet awhile.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

His rhythm and steadfastness will guide you along life’s path.

Today is a GOOD day,

Natalie
