Only at Night
It was routinely -30*F or colder when we could see the northern lights (aurora borealis) in Alaska. In our small, rural community, we didn’t have the glare of streetlights to obstruct our view.
At midnight, as we bundled up in parkas, hats and mittens, we stepped into the dark, icy world outside, stars and moon for our light. And the aurora was a fantastic dancing choreography of color, arranged by God Himself.
But we only saw the aurora in the blackness of night.
Dark was required to see the light.
We all have dark places in our lives - places we’d rather not open to God because we are ashamed of them or overwhelmed by them. We leave these doors closed and locked so that light has no chance of coming in.
But if we don’t allow God into the difficult parts of our lives, those parts will never be what they could. They will remain plunged in darkness, begging for a beam of light.
God isn’t afraid of the dark. He isn’t weak or powerless or surprised by it. In fact, some of His best displays require brilliant light igniting midnight.
He can and wants to heal what is in our pitch-black places.
So surrender your hard places to Him; open the door just a crack. His light won’t slowly creep in - it will burst in, blazing forward, devouring the dark. And you will see the glorious, healing effect of His power and love.
So fling wide every door, throw open every shutter, pull back every curtain!
He is with you and His radiant light is shining the way.
Verses About His Light
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:4-5 NIV
But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John 3:21 NIV
Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.”
John 12:35 NIV
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
