The Bakery Tour

Steven and I have traveled the northeast and now southeast on what we’ve affectionately named The Bakery Tour.

So many bakeries.

It started in Vermont at Scott Farm Orchard, where we picked the crispest, sweetest apples I’ve ever eaten. As we went into the little orchard store, we spied a small bakery case with apple cider doughnuts. There are not enough words in Webster’s to describe just how delicious these melt-in-your-mouth mini-doughnuts were.

And that’s just where the gluttony began.

Our next stop? Bar Harbor, Maine. As we drove around this quaint city, we passed a hand-drawn wooden sign that said “Homemade Pies.” We nearly ran off the road trying to do a u-turn. And, yes, we bought a pie in someone’s driveway. Strawberry Rhubarb. Buttery, flakey homemade crust. Again, no words.

We’ve had cookies and slices of cake and more doughnuts and pies. It’s been quite a tour.

And as much as I love the actual eating of these confections, I’ve enjoyed the experience even more.

It’s standing in the middle of an apple orchard on a crisp fall day, enjoying a doughnut. Or visiting with the “pie lady” in her yard as she told us her story and we told her ours.

These are the moments we see God’s hand of blessing. He delights in delighting us. Often we’re just too busy, hurrying to the next thing, so distracted that we don’t appreciate the remarkable moment dawning right now.

I’ve had that realization on this trip. While I’m ready to plan the next thing, I miss enjoying exactly where I am.

It’s something I need to work on - being present right now. Stopping to savor the moment.

And maybe enjoy another doughnut.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.

Psalm 118:29

Today is a GOOD day!
