Beneath

I stumbled upon it . . .


discarded at the edge of the woods. A forgotten hanging basket that had been tossed. 


Dry and brittle, it was obviously dead.


But looking closely, a thin green shoot was defiantly pushing its way through the dusty soil, reaching for the sun’s warmth. And a small purple flower had bloomed - something alive and beautiful amid autumn’s crunch of dying leaves and fallen acorns that littered the ground. 



It was new life. This plant was not finished.



Am I aware of something alive, deep in my soul, especially when all I feel on the surface is rundown and worn out? At times, it’s hard to imagine that there is any life beneath the dead branches of my shortcomings and disappointments and inconsistencies. 



Do you ever feel this way?



But there’s Jesus.



“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

John 10:10 RSV



Jesus offers the abundant life. Because He intimately knows us, He can free that part of our souls beneath the dry and brittle deadness of sin and failure. 



He accesses that which is not dead, but alive. He brings forth what He knows we need - the new and the good and the hopeful. He renews the joy we thought we’d lost. He again stirs us with purpose and intent. He reaffirms our fellowship with Him. 



And He does it in abundance.



This week, are you feeling a bit dry and dusty? Spend some extra quiet time with Him. Allow Him to shine His light into your soul and free the new life that longs to emerge. 



It’s what He came here to do.



It’s what He is still doing.



He’s giving us the abundant life!

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
