The truth of the matter is, we all come to prayer with a tangled mass of motives – altruistic and selfish, merciful and hateful, loving and bitter. Frankly, this side of eternity we will never unravel the good from the bad, the pure from the impure. But what I have come to see is that God is big enough to receive us with all our mixture.
~ Richard Foster, Prayer
There have been times in life when I’ve thought I was not worthy to ask God for anything. Like David, my sin is ever before me.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight. Psalm 51: 3-4
And yet God, in His never-ending mercy, does not draw a boundary line between our asking and His hearing. He does not reject our humble approach to the throne, but instead He clears the way, urging us to come close, with confidence…
It is the throne of grace.
And that’s one of the great benefits of being a follower – His grace. We are not responsible for being perfect or for having all the answers and we don’t have to be in charge of everything. When we follow our Creator and Sustainer, He will lead us directly to Himself, because that is the kind of Father He is.
As followers, we may approach boldly, ask fearlessly, and wait expectantly. We will receive exactly what He knows we most need. We confidently trust that His answer, His timing, and His will, are perfect.
What is heavy on your heart today? Go directly to Him. Approach. Ask. Wait. The more often we draw near to Him and the more time we spend in His presence, the more we know to rely on His perfect answers.
Because approaching and asking and waiting – it’s not about our worthiness . . .
it’s about His grace.
Jesus said: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8
Father, today we expectantly wait for Your counsel as we ask and seek and knock; and we look forward with confidence and anticipation to Your perfect will opening before us. Thank you, Lord, for giving us the assurance that You hear our every prayer. Amen.
